Be Kind and Empathetic

Be Kind & Empathetic

There are moments when I write about topics I love or find intriguing, and other times when I delve into aspects that evoke sadness, annoyance, apprehension, or anger. I also use writing as an outlet for past hurts. Writing is my tool for navigating through these challenging times. It’s crucial for people to grasp that words can inflict genuine harm, despite the popular saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me,” which is entirely false!

Unfortunately, many individuals fail to realize how a single word can trigger a past experience, resulting in emotional turmoil and distress. Yes, I used the word “harm.” Most of us associate harm with physical injury. Nevertheless, we are all human beings with emotions and minds, and some of us even grapple with mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, or other severe illnesses.

Being a content creator entails dealing with unpredictability, numerous obstacles, and unexpected roadblocks. While most individuals navigate this landscape with minimal friction, others struggle but persist nonetheless. Creating compelling written content and videos while sharing our passion for various subjects demands substantial effort.

The crux of the matter is that, as creators, we invest considerable effort in producing great content and sharing our passions. Yet, there are individuals who feel compelled to tear us down! It’s puzzling why being polite, kind, and encouraging seems to have faded into the background. Instead of offering constructive criticism and support to help creators improve, some choose to use negative comments or words that, unbeknownst to them, can trigger past experiences of abuse. Some people are sensitive to negativity, and others are sensitive to words!

In light of this, one or two comments often express sentiments such as “Get over it,” “Grow a thicker skin,” and “Don’t engage in content creation if you can’t handle criticism!”

This situation is disheartening. Why should we, as content creators, have to comply with any of these demands? We don’t go around leaving the same negative comments on other creators’ platforms. We don’t direct such negative comments towards our viewers! What gives viewers the right to unleash their negative comments? If the content doesn’t resonate with them, they can simply move on.

Some individuals complain because they perceive a content creator’s voice to be unsuitable. They may find the pitch too high or low, the volume not to their liking, or the delivery overly anxious or lacking confidence. What they fail to realize is that anxiety or nervousness can affect our tone and delivery. Anxiety alone is debilitating, and when unsympathetic individuals enter the picture, the repercussions for the creator can be unpredictable!

I’m weary of the toxicity in our world. I create because I want to share what holds significance in my life. That certainly doesn’t give others the right to exploit this to feel better about themselves by belittling a creator due to their voice or manner of expression.

I recently watched a video in which a content creator shared the mistreatment they endured from viewers! Comments like “Your videos are too lengthy,” “Too much talking,” “You sound whiny,” “You seem like you’re begging,” “Not enough interaction,” “Boring unboxing videos,” “Inadequate tutorials,” or “Ignoring questions during live sessions” were endless.

Instead of tearing us down, why can’t these individuals be positive and supportive, enabling creators to evolve and improve over time? Rome wasn’t built in a day! Unless one is flawless, our content will naturally evolve and improve with time. Even some of the larger creators who watch smaller ones might contribute to this issue.

If only all of us, as human beings, were more supportive and kind to one another, the world would be a better place. Kindness and a simple smile can transform a person’s entire world! A single act of kindness, a shared smile, can make a difference to someone enduring a tough day or grappling with overwhelming anxiety. Kindness can help soothe someone’s anxiety, particularly when they are presenting a live video or writing a blog to be read later.

I would like to delve deeper into this topic, but finding the right words is a daunting task. I ultimately decided against creating a video about this because I knew it could easily spiral into a spectacle.

My name is Katy and I have been living in South Greenland since August 2011. I was born in Charleston, South Carolina, raised in Florida, and migrated to South Greenland through marriage. I am married to an amazing Greenlandic man living 60º N - about 670 km south of the Arctic Circle. I am a master gardener of 50 years. I started my love of ornamental gardening at the young age of 11. My paternal aunt gave me my first cutting and told me how to plant it. She also showed me some simple crochet stitches and sent me home with a cutting of coleus and a crochet hook with some yarn. At eleven it was like taking home a prize. Little did I know what would happen because of that. I learned how to sew my own clothing during my teenage years and that sewing has flowed over into me learning how to be a quilt maker. I love to take photographs of everything that catches my eye. I have thousands of photos. I am in love with icebergs. I don't think I will ever tire of seeing them and taking photos of them. The Greenland landscape is magnificent and it never disappoints. I also love to crochet as well as cook. I love making up my own recipes and serving them up to my "Heart Light" for test tasting. He is such a trooper. For the most part, he loves everything I've made. I'm a summer tourist guide and love it when fellow Americans come to visit us so that I can tell them about Greenland and most of the time I always tell our story since it's so special. I have 3 adult children and 4 grandchildren. I have grown to love Greenland as much as I love my home country USA. Greenland is like no other place and I will write lots about it and share photographs as well. I also love music and movies as well and I like to read. I will also be sharing blogs about quilt-making and other subjects that I'm involved with.
